New Spinal Fusion System Undergoing Human Trials

About This Blog:

  • Researchers from the University of New South Wales in Australia are testing a new spinal fusion device that is said to promote bone growth, according to Becker’s Spine Review.
  • This new spinal fusion system is called the Thru-Fuze, and it’s made of porous titanium, which helps connect vertebrae and provide structural support.
  • Dr. Mark Giovanini of NeuroMicroSpine discusses the different features of this new spinal fusion device, the Thru-Fuze.

According to Becker’s Spine Review, the Thru-Fuze will be tested in human trials at the University of New South Wales, Australia this month thanks to a $1.59m grant from the New South Wales Government’s Medical Device Fund.

The research team calls Thru-Fuze a new “spine-welding” invention for patients suffering from chronic low back pain due to degenerative disc diseases. The Thru-Fuze is used in procedures that require spinal fusions, and researchers are deeming it a “cheaper” and “simpler” technology than traditional bone grafts.

Patients undergoing spinal fusions typically suffer from a degenerative spinal disorder that has caused the spine to become fragile and unstable.

Over time, spinal vertebrae may sustain fractures and the discs in between them may rupture. When this happens, chronic pain and inflammation develop, causing the patient to seek interventional treatment or minimally invasive surgery.

According to Thru-Fuze inventor and UNSW Professor Bill Walsh, the Thru-Fuze™ device stabilizes the spine without the need for a bone graft.

“Over time, the device then acts as a bridge between the adjacent vertebrae for additional bone to grow across, fusing the adjacent vertebrae together, bone-to-bone,” said Walsh.

Should the clinical trials be successful, patients could experience less invasive surgeries with more effective implant options, and a faster recovery. Until the FDA in America approves the device, we won’t know how it can better the lives of NeuroMicroSpine patients. Still, Dr. Mark Giovanini will keep patients updated on the success of the Thru-Fuze.
