Dr. Mark Giovanini recently participated in the first robotically assisted sacroiliac (SI) joint fusion surgery performed at an ambulatory service center in the Southeast. The surgery was done at Cornerstone ASC.
Dr. Giovanini performed the surgery using the Mazor X and Mazor Renaissance Robotics system, from Mazor Robotics. The system is a surgical assurance platform that offers pre-operative analytics, as well as intra-operative guidance and verification. Surgeons can review a full, 3D surgical plan with unique computerized alignment calculations to ensure accurate surgical moves throughout the procedure.
It’s important to note that the robotic system does not perform the surgery. Dr. Giovanini is still the one performing the operation. The system simply helps facilitate a plan so Dr. Giovanini can execute it with absolute precision.
SI joint fusion is a procedure that fuses the ilium, the big bone in your hip, with the sacrum, the big, triangle-shaped bone at the base of your spine. It’s sometimes recommended if medication, physical therapy, and injections haven’t been able to relieve SI joint pain.
Dr. Giovanini has specialized in minimally invasive spine (MIS) surgery for many years and has now added robotic-guided service to offer the most advanced MIS care available. Clinical studies have shown that Mazor robotic-guided systems reduce intra-operative radiation to the patient and staff while reducing patient complications and revision rates.
Reimbursement is based on Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes, so Dr. Giovanini receives no additional payment from using the robotic device. The investment is focused on clinical outcomes and patient recovery.
