Decompression With Fusion May Offer Better Results For Back Pain

About This Blog:

  • According to researchers at Lund University in Sweden, patients with a specific spinal condition may experience better results with decompression and fusion surgery over decompression alone.
  • The study involved 1,624 patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS) or predominant low back pain.
  • Dr. Mark Giovanini of NeuroMicroSpine explains how researchers came to the conclusion decompression with fusion may offer better results for some back pain cases.

Dr. Mark Giovanini of NeuroMicroSpine performs a number of minimally invasive spine surgeries for patients with certain spinal conditions and injuries. Depending on the patient’s pain, other symptoms, spinal condition and current health, Dr. Giovanini may recommend a decompression, decompression with fusion, discectomy with fusion, disc replacement—the list goes on and on!

Nevertheless, according to researchers at Lund University in Sweden, patients with spondylolisthesis degeneration (SD) and/or predominant back pain may see better results undergoing a decompression with fusion over a decompression alone. For the study, researchers used the Swedish Spine Register to identify 1,624 patients who were operated on for DS at the L4-5 level. Moreover, self-reported outcomes for post-procedural back pain were used.

One-year post-surgery, patients with predominant back pain reported higher scores of improvement for their back pain after decompression with fusion compared to the patients who just underwent decompression surgery. For more information on this study, visit the source link below.

It’s important patients remember every case is different and that different conditions will require different spine surgeries. Moreover, back pain can differ for some over others and be located in different areas along the spine. Given all of these factors, patients are encouraged to schedule their appointment with Dr. Giovanini of NeuroMicroSpine and discuss their symptoms with him for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
