Study Shows Spine Surgery Outcomes More Reliable at 12 Months

About This Blog:

  • According to a study published in Medscape Medical News, 12-month outcomes after spine surgery are more reliable than 3-month post-surgery outcomes.
  • The results from this study are especially beneficial for spine registries—they identify the true efficacy of most spine procedures.
  • Dr. Mark Giovanini of NeuroMicroSpine explains why spine surgery outcomes are typically more reliable at 12 months than at 3 months.

This study’s findings are incredibly important for clinical registries, especially since registries have become valuable ways to measure the success of specific spine surgeries or treatments. The study also reveals how important it is to stay in touch with patients for at least one-year post-surgery to ensure they experience optimal results.

Dr. Mark Giovanini of NeuroMicroSpine always has his patients’ best interest in mind, which is why he schedules follow-up appointments to monitor their progress. Having said that, it’s important patients remember that with time comes continued improvement (in most cases). With any surgical procedure, recovery is a process and some patients may experience full surgical benefits after longer periods of time.

Regardless, data from this study indicated the following:

  • Patient-reported outcomes provided at baseline, 3 months and 12 months after surgery showed an improvement in general health and disability.
  • Postoperative disability figures showed 11.5% of patients who achieved improvement at 3 months fell below the improvement threshold by 12 months
  • About 11% of patients who did not reach clinically significant improvement at 3 months surpassed the improvement threshold at 12 months.
  • Postoperative general health showed 8.5% of patients lost improvement from 3 to 12 months, and 4.0% of the patients who did not reach the threshold at 3 months gained it by 12 months after surgery.
