Safety and Efficacy of Outpatient Spine Surgery

Having developed outpatient spine surgery centers at both the Andrews Institute Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) and the Cornerstone SurgiCare, Dr. Mark Giovanini of NeuroMicroSpine knows a thing or two about safe, cost-effective spine care. Furthermore, having performed countless spine surgeries in both hospital and ASC settings, you’ll realize very quickly why ASCs are the preferred choice for outpatient spine surgery.

Outpatient surgery centers (another term for ASCs) in general, are specialized facilities designed for outpatient surgical procedures. When a patient elects to have surgery, their procedure will either be performed in a hospital or ASC. If your surgeon is a physician partner at a neighboring ASC, chances are you’ll have your much-needed surgery in that setting.

Regardless, ASCs are designed with the patient in mind. Many ASCs are outfitted to meet the surgeons desired specifications, allowing the surgeon to work with ease and provide patients with the best possible experience and outcome. Additionally, the cost of an outpatient surgery is usually 45 to 60 percent less than one performed at a hospital.

A study published by the International Journal of Spine Surgery echoed this claim and found that preforming an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion in an ASC not only reduced a patient’s hospitalization time and exposure to infections, but the outpatient ACDF can save patients/physicians anywhere from $4,000 to $8,000.

If that wasn’t enough, 70 percent of surgeries performed in an ASC start within seven minutes of their scheduled time*. This is pretty impressive considering hospital schedules are frequently bogged down and start much later than their scheduled time.

For Dr. Mark Giovanini, outpatient spine surgery is the preferred choice for optimal healing and healthcare results. Which is why he chooses to perform some of the most advanced spine surgeries out of a facility that allows him to do so with ease. Cornerstone SurgiCare, LLC is a state-of-the-art surgical center that provides the most comprehensive care possible.
