Mesoblast Adult Stem Cells for Degenerative Disc Disease

About This Blog:

  • There is a new, exciting endeavor on the horizon for those suffering from degenerative disc disease of the lumbar spine.
  • Dr. Mark Giovanini of NeuroMicroSpine was selected for a Mesoblast adult stem cell trial as a clinical investigator.
  • Very few centers have been selected to participate in this opportunity, and Dr. Giovanini looks forward to enrolling patients soon! Continue reading to learn more about this clinical trial for lumbar degenerative disc disease.

Adult stem cells differentiate into specialized cell types and facilitate endogenous tissue repair by responding to signals from damaged tissue.
That’s a lot of fancy words for: stem cells repair and regenerate damaged tissues, bone and cartilage.

Stem cells can transform into these specialized cell types (i.e. blood or vascular cells, muscle, cartilage, bone, etc.) after a single dose of treatment. The Mesoblast trial includes highly purified, immunoselected stem cells, which may include:

  • Mesenchymal Precursor Cells (MPCs)
  • Culture-expanded Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs)
  • Dental Pulp Stem Cells (DPSCs)
  • Expanded Hematopoietic Stem Cells (HSCs)

According the to company website, the highly-purified, immunoselected MPCs and the in-vitro cultured MSCs (derived form adult tissues), release healing factors to:

  • Induce blood vessel formation
  • Diminish scar tissue
  • Enhance bone and cartilage growth.

For the repair and maintenance of degenerated intervertebral discs, Mesoblast’s MPCs provide long-term pain relief and functional improvement by repairing structural damage.

Pre-clinical sheep studies showed a “significant regeneration of disc anatomy, increase in proteoglycan content, and increase in disc height, for at least six months” with a single injection of Mesoblast’s MPCs.

For more information on the clinical trial, visit the Mesoblast website under Intervertebral Disc Repair. Dr. Mark Giovanini was selected by Mesoblast to lead an investigation into the safety and efficacy of adults stem cells for lumbar degenerative disc disease.

Individuals with progressive, severe lumbar degenerative disc disease who have not responded to conservative treatment may be considered candidates for the procedure. Dr. Giovanini of NeuroMicroSpine will publish more information on enrolling for the clinical trial as it becomes available.
